Celebrate cycling all October with fun, free, and family-friendly events across Ōamaru!

From trails and talks to breakfasts and beginner courses, there’s something for everyone and it's all been made possible thanks to Sport Waitaki, Waitaki Road Safety, Youthtown Oamaru, AA North Otago, Southern District Police and Waitaki District Council.

Biketober Bike Trail

When: All October Where: Ōamaru Public Gardens 

Looking for something fun these school holidays? Head to the gardens and join our Bike Trail adventure.

Hidden around the gardens are five bright yellow bikes – each with a secret letter. Collect all the letters, then pop into the Ōamaru Library to find the entry box. Unscramble the letters to solve the mystery word and enter the draw.

A great way for families to explore the gardens, play, and enjoy the holidays together!

“On Your Bike!” – A Photographic History of Cycling in Waitaki

Take a journey through time and discover the cycling heritage of our district in this unique photographic display.

“Two Wheels, Many Worlds”

When: Thursday 9 October, 6:00 – 7:00pm Where: Ōamaru Library

Thirteen friends from North Otago and South Canterbury recently tackled the legendary Annapurna Circuit in Nepal on mountain bikes. From rainforests to alpine passes higher than Everest Base Camp, bike-packers Mike Bacchus and Bevan Newlands will share their tales, photos and video footage from this and other cycling escapades.

Bluelight Bike Breakfast

When: Wednesday 15 October, 7:45am Where: Ōamaru Police Station Who: Open to all Year 7–13 students who bike to school that day!

Ride your bike to school and kickstart the day with a BBQ breakfast and hot drinks, thanks to Bluelight and Z Oamaru.

Good food, good drinks and good vibes — don’t miss it!

Biketober Beginners E-Bike Course

When: Thursday 30 October, 10:00am – 12:30pm Where: North Otago Netball Courts Cost: Free 

New to e-bikes? Or keen to give one a go? Local cycle shops will have e-bikes available to try.

Join this fun, relaxed session designed to build confidence and help you enjoy the ride.
