ACTIVE RECREATION:

Physical Activities Designed to be Less Structured and Competitive for the Purpose of Wellbeing and Enjoyment!

Active Recreation Advisor

My name is Caitlyn Huhu, and I aim to provide FREE support to our communities and help facilitate quality physical activity experiences for rangatahi across Otago.

In my role as Active Recreation Advisor, I work with, and in support of, rangatahi across Otago, to ensure all young people have access to, and input into, quality active recreation opportunities.

Growing up participating in a wide range of sports and activities has led to my passion for the positive influence physical activity and recreation can have for young people - and I am excited to work collaboratively with rangatahi across Otago to make a positive impact in the community.

Creating Active Recreation Initiatives for Youth

Mikaela Hawley - Activation Coordinator

Kia ora, my name is Mikaela Hawley. As an intern, I am to empower the voices of rangatahi and provide FREE support that reflects their needs.

Drawing on my own experience growing up in and around sport, I’m excited to help positively influence youth engagement in active recreation. I believe personal development and enjoyment through physical activity should be a natural part of everyday life for all – but there’s still work to do in bridging the gap in accessibility.

Through collaboration with Sport Otago and our community partners, I hope to help design and deliver inclusive, engaging opportunities for all rangatahi to thrive through active recreation.

Zoë Suter - Activation Coordinator

Kia ora, I’m Zoë Suter, a student intern at Sport Otago. My journey in sport has shaped my passion for supporting others to find their place through movement. I believe that everyone deserves the chance to be active and feel connected, no matter their circumstances – and I am proud to be part of this kaupapa at Sport Otago.

Sport Otago’s vision of a healthy, active, connected community aligns with my values. I’m dedicated to working alongside rangatahi and communities to co-create physical activity opportunities that truly reflect their needs/interests. Active recreation is essential for young people's growth, and when rangatahi have a voice in the designing and delivery of activities, we ensure they’re engaged and empowered.

Being part of the Sport Otago team allows me to continue learning, while also giving back to the communities that have shaped me. It’s a privilege to support initiatives that create opportunities for movement, growth, and a sense of belonging.
