About Sport Waitaki

Sport Waitaki is a satellite office of Sport Otago that was established in December 2004 to directly address the sport and physical activity needs to the Waitaki community and co-ordinate access to the range of services available through S port Otago.  Due to the widespread geographic nature of the Otago region, in order to truly meet its region wide mission of 'getting people active', Sport Otago recognised the need to have a full time presence in key locations outside Dunedin.  Sport Waitaki follows on from the Sport Central satellite office, based in Cromwell, which has been operating successfully since 2003.

Key Aims And Objectives

To coordinate and strengthen the support structures and resources available to the Waitaki region in order to best meet the sport and recreation needs of this community.

web_sport_waitaki_1Sport Waitaki will:

  • Provide a first point of contact for sport and physical activity related enquiries.
  • Identify local needs and develop appropriate strategies.
  • Co-ordinate access to training and educational opportunities and all other Sport Otago programmes and resources.
  • Develop working links with local community sport providers and assist with the co-ordination of local programmes and events.

HALO Initative

Sport Waitaki’s “Healthy Active Living Oamaru (HALO Community Trust)” is an initiative to increase the amount of shared and linked projects achieving similar physical activity, nutrition and healthy lifestyle. This group was formed out of a need to work smarter in the community group sector operationally. Sport Waitaki created this initiative with the support of other community groups in order to share workloads, events and projects running in the Waitaki District. The group has a membership of more than 50 groups and has three arms of operation that incorporate Awareness, Action, and Advocacy. A web-based information service and calendar serves as a mechanism for better planning and sharing. It is now starting to identify gaps and overlaps in community programmes and events and is allowing groups the opportunity to form networks and partnerships to work smarter towards achieving their community goals.  For more information go to www.halo.org.nz

Talking Heads Iinitative

“Talking Heads” is a Sport Waitaki initiative designed to progress and link the individual sport development work being done in the local community with leading sports organizations. This involves groups or local Regional Sports Organisations (RSOs) that have completed and have a current strategic plan, mission and vision to coming together and sharing, ideas, planning, best practice, issues and solutions at a regional level. This has led to some volunteer and seasonal operational amalgamations that will potentially bring some exciting and sector leading innovations to rural sports organization.
