Before proceeding to apply please ensure you meet these general eligibility criteria:

  • Do you represent Otago (or Central Otago, North Otago or South Otago) at the provincial level for your sport?
  • If there is no provincial competition for your sport, are you a permanent resident of Otago?

You will not be generally eligible if you are:

  • Neither representing nor resident in Otago.
  • Injured and not currently competing; although you can apply again once you are competing again.

If you believe you are generally eligible download the form below. (This is a Word document format version.)

What Can I Apply For?

We do not require you to go into a lot of detail of what you will be using your grant for.  Remember that the purpose of the Skeggs Foundation is to support Otago athletes in competing at the elite level whilst remaining based in the province, so priority will be given to costs that relate directly to that objective.  Examples include travel to competitions, development camps or training opportunities.  We recommend you apply for support for purposes such as these.

Before submitting your application please ensure that:

  • You fill out all the sections that are relevant to you.  These are different between new applicants and those who have received a grant in the past.

  • You have given us an idea of your projected total costs in your budget.  You best estimate is acceptable.

  • You have obtained the endorsement of your regional body, or national body where no regional body exists.  We will not consider applications that do not have the support of the governing body.

  • If you are a new applicant, or have changed banks since you last received a grant, attach a bank deposit slip.  We will need this if you are successful in your application.  If you are overseas and are emailing the application form please ensure someone posts us the slip.

If you have any questions about whether you are eligible to apply contact Duane Donovan on 03 474 6419 (or 0800 776 786) or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

How Will I Know If I Have Received A Grant?

After the Skeggs Foundation Trustees meet to decide the distribution of grants, all applicants, both successful and unsuccessful will be contacted.

If you are successful you will be sent a contract that you have to complete and return to us so you can be paid your grant.  You will also have to provide a photograph (preferably digital) of you taking part in your sport; the details of how to do this will be in your contract.  You cannot be paid until your completed contract is returned to us.  It can take a few weeks for you to be paid so don't rely on the money coming to you immediately after you return your contract.

Unsuccessful applicants will be informed if they have not received a grant.  The Trustees and Sport Otago staff will not answer questions regarding why a grant was not made.

Reporting

Those who receive a grant are required to submit a report outlining what they used the funds for.  The deadline for reports made in the March funding round is 20 August.  For the September funding round it is 20 February.  You do not have to use this exact form, but please ensure you answer the questions on it if you are going to send us something else.
