The annual ASB Otago Sports Awards serve to both recognise excellence in achievement and to raise funds for the Halberg Sport Opportunity programme across Otago.  Established in 1990 the awards are the longest running regional sports awards in the country and are widely respected as being one of the major annual events in Dunedin.  Past winners of the supreme Otago Sports Person of the Year include: Greg Henderson, Jeff Wilson, Danyon Loader, Alison Shanks, Carl Hayman, Hamish Bond and Tania Murray.

SPARC Volunteer Coach of the Year

This very important event recognises the contribution of the hundreds of volunteers who coach teams across Otago and make sport an option for thousands of participants.  As well as giving well earned recognition to these valuable volunteers there is also a national award ceremony to recognise those who have made an outstanding contribution in their community.  The Volunteer Coach awards are run annually in August and September with the national award winners named in November.

Push Play

Sport Otago has been running Push Play events since SPARC introduced the programme in 1998.  Push Play is all about achieving a minimum of 60 minutes of vigorous physical activity each day as part of a healthy lifestyle.  Sport Otago has worked to introduce people to the wide variety of sport and recreation options available to achieve this goal.  We have organised many events ourselves, such as the Virtual Triathlon and Winter Walks series, and worked with sports groups to hold events such as fun runs, open days and social tournaments.

Partner Events

Sport Otago works with a number of agencies to deliver events that reach a wide range of the community.  We work with sporting groups, Councils, health agencies and other volunteer groups to increase the number of events that enable people to lead healthy, active lives.  Examples include: Bikewise, the Womens Expo, Childrens Day and the Pacific Peoples Expo.

Regional Events

Our regional offices in Cromwell, Oamaru and Balclutha organise and hold events that reflect the unique needs to their communities.  As well as contributing to increasing activity in their region our regional coordinators can provide advice on a diverse range of event management issues, including event planning, risk management, budgeting, traffic management, evalution and more.
